Steve Irwin's dream for Australia Zoo in tatters


STEVE Irwin's beloved Australia Zoo is in trouble amid claims of debt and mismanagement.

The Queensland wildlife park has dismissed up to 30 staff, with some claiming the zoo is on the brink of collapse.

Former curator Bruce Murdock told New Idea, which goes on sale today, the Crocodile Hunter's dream was in tatters.

"They have dreams but they don't know how to put a structure in place to make it happen. There is no funding allocation, no budgeting for the long term."

Former zoo receptionist Amy-Lee Hines also told the magazine the zoo was in trouble.

"If things don't turn around, (Australia Zoo) will go down," she said.

The magazine spoke to about 30 people - former staff and locals from the Beerwah area where the zoo is - and many blamed the zoo's woes on management.

  1. That's a shame Peter I was sorry to read this. Everyone I know that has visited Australia Zoo really enjoyed it. I haven't visited it unfortunately but would have liked to.

    Steve Irwin certainly made his stamp in many memories that's for sure.
