Visayan Warty Pigs arrive to bring Christmas Cheer

Nights before Christmas, 4 endangered piglets were stirring




Christmas became more festive at the Negros Forests and Ecological Foundation (NFEFI) Biodiversity Conservation Center in Bacolod City with the birth of four bouncing piglets to a critically endangered Visayan warty pig.




Sita, 8, gave birth on the night of Dec. 21, according to Robert Harland, an NFEFI trustee. The father is Jojo, a 16-year-old warty pig.



Jimmy Valenzuela, deer and pig keeper at the NFEFI, had noted Sita’s nesting behavior in the early afternoon of that day and monitored her delivery between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., Harland said.



It was an easy delivery for Sita who, four years ago, also gifted the foundation with four piglets, he said.
