A 35 year old Loro Parque employee was taken to the Universitario de Canarias hospital after being mistakingly shot with an immobilising dart intended for a Gorilla.

The unfortunate accident took place at 23.40 yesterday shortly after local police were informed of the Gorilla escape.

In actuality no Gorilla had escaped and this was all part of a mandatory escape drill where reality was added by one zoo employee dressing up in a Gorilla costume.

The unfortunate victim was hit in the leg by a dart delivering a dose of narcotic big enough to knock out a 200 kilo Gorilla.

Due to an "internal problem" which has "now been solved" seven tigers escaped this morning from the Cocodrilos Park in Los Corralillos near Agüimes on Grand Canaria. No other details are available at this time.

Originally it was believed that only four of the Tigers had escaped but later it turned out there were seven. Over one hundred Civil Guards were called to assist zoo staff in containing the emergency.

Three of the Tigers were shot dead and the remaining four were recaptured.

The 'Parque de los Cocodrilos' on Gran Canaria first opened its doors in 1988 and claims to be built up on rescued animals. It has somewhat of a mixed opinion with visitors. There are several Tigers in the Park, some of which are hand reared.

Three cheetahs escape from Christchurch park


Three cheetahs which escaped briefly from the Orana Wildlife Park in Christchurch today posed no danger to the public, park staff say.




The three male animals escaped out of their enclosures at 12.30pm and full emergency procedures were taken immediately, the park's chief executive Lynn Anderson told NZPA.



"People were immediately ushered to safe houses and the animals were re-secured within half an hour.



"The cheetahs escaped through a rusting fence that had been identified earlier for repairs."



The cheetahs managed to swim the moat covering the perimeter of the fence but posed no real danger to the public, Ms Anderson said.



"The risk to human life was low. However, any risk to the public is unacceptable."



A full investigation had been launched but Ms Anderson praised her team for their quick action in recapturing the cheetahs.

A zoo spokesperson said the two big cats managed to sneak out of their iron enclosure when three animal keepers were disinfecting it by opening one of the cage doors.

'The two tigers came out of the enclosure and started walking lazily in the open leading to great amount of panic and fear,' zoo warden Narayan Mahanta told IANS.

The zoo, the only one in Assam, was teeming with people with an estimated 10,000 visitors inside the premises when the two tigers walked out of the enclosure.

'We immediately evacuated the visitors and tried to locate the cats before tranquilising one of them relaxing by the side of a pool inside the zoo,' Mahanta said.

A large contingent of police and wildlife officials rushed to the zoo and managed to tranquilise the other tiger around noon.

'The entire operation took us about three hours before both the cats were tranquilised and taken to safety. They are now under observation by a team of veterinarians,' the zoo warden said.

No one was injured with the tigers slowly walking around the zoo even as thousands of visitors simply ran for their lives seeing the cats on the prowl.

'We were terrified to see the two big tigers majestically walking past and simply ran for life,' a visibly shocked Arun Das, a college student, said.

'I saw the tigers from say a distance of about 20 feet from me.'

Zoo authorities have since ordered a probe to find out how the tigers managed to get out of the enclosure that also houses seven other big cats.

'We have already begun a high level enquiry into the incident, although I must say all the animal keepers engaged in the zoo are dedicated and experienced,' Mahanta said.

In 2007, a 50-year-old man was mauled to death by a tiger in the same zoo when he scaled a barricade and went close to the enclosure to click photographs of the cats, while another visitor in 2008 was seriously injured by a Himalayan black bear after he jumped into the animal's enclosure

The County Board close the case without further action

Summary of the case

It has come to the county administrative board's attention that staff responsible for Scania Zoo in Höör were forced to kill all the wolves in the zoo.

The killing took place late afternoon on Saturday 9 January 2010, then two and then
three more wolves managed to escape from the park's wolf enclosure. During the
afternoon hours when parts of the wolf pack found themselves outside the enclosure was demolished one red deer hind, and some get inside the zoo.

The County Board has, by reason of the foregoing, conducted a supervision visit
Foundation Skåne Zoo The 14 January 2010.
 
Grounds for the County Administrative Board's decision


According to § 40 species protection regulation (2007:845) is prohibited without permission exhibit animals of wild species in a zoo. Similarly, for, according to § 42
species protection regulation (2007:845), to a zoo that is licensable under § 40, and conducted without a permit shall be closed to the public. If the condition for a zoo in whole or in part is withdrawn, the zoo is closed to public in those parts for which the license has been revoked.

If the authorized referred Ibla § 40 species protection regulation (2007:845) violation of a provision essential to the nature-or animal welfare, may provincial government revoke the permit if that is not manifestly unreasonable.
 
According to § 59 species protection regulation (2007:845), the regulatory authority
regularly inspect the zoo referred to in § 40 of species protection regulation.

The County Board decided on 10 February 2004 to grant the Foundation Skåne Zoo license, according to the then 19 a § species protection regulation (1998:179), that
under the same regulation § 18 exhibit animals species that live wild.

Authorization gitighetstid was set at 31 December 2009, and current conditions shown in the attached decision. The operator has during December 2009 submitted to the County Board with the application for new business license.

The County Board has, according to species protection regulation (2007:845), operational oversight responsibilities for the zoo's business license, and thus decided conditions.

The operational objective of oversight is, according to species protection regulation, with reference to Chapter 26 § 1 Environmental Code and the enforcement regulation to the Environmental Code (1998:90),

To ensure the purpose of the legislation and ensure that the conditions in the , the business license is enforced and where necessary to remedy the situation.

The County Board has conducted site visits at the Foundation Skåne Zoo only with respect to business license and an inspection under animal welfare legislation has not been implemented.

At the supervisory visit conducted provincial government, together with operator, a review of the conditions are given in business license. (bilaga1) The County Board could thus conclude that Foundation Skåne Zoo in most respects well satisfy the conditions decided on the basis of species protection regulation. Among the documents
presented can be labeled business plan (Annex 2) The Foundation for Scania "Zoo" which relate well to the conditions stated that the zoo is conducted on a scientific basis with regard to eg the promotion and conservation of the species are represented. The zoo also participates in courses leading to knowledge of species conservation and maintaining a good information exchange with other operators and the public.

Activity Report (Appendix 3) for 2008, animal inventory list (according to § 51
species protection regulation (2007:845) (Appendix 4) and collection plan for the Foundation Skåne Zoo (Annex 5) is also included in the activity documentation.

Given that the operator had to kill its entire holding of wolves was appropriate for the County Board to discuss particular point nine in conditions for business license (Annex 1), which established the park Plan how any escapes or sabotage. (Annex 6) County Administration notes that the Foundation Skåne Zoo acted admirably in the acute situation which arose when a number of wolves escaped from the enclosure. The killing was, according County Administrative Board's assessment and in the circumstances required.

The situation was handled strictly in accordance with established Plan of Action (Annex 6) for accident or sabotage situations. This action plan has also been the subject of
"Practice", particularly in conjunction with the emergency services. Euthanasia Decision
was, as provincial government understands, partly because the possibility that they escaped Wolves were escaping from the zoo area. Such a scenario was considered of staff imminent. The killing of the remaining 7 wolves in enclosure was then discovered that one of the 5 escaped individuals were pack leader, the so-called "alpha bitch". The remaining wolves were very worried and stress as "alpha bitch" disappeared.

When inspecting the wolf enclosure could provincial government noted that some technical weaknesses relating to enclosure design possibly could have been on hand but
that these weaknesses have been very difficult to detect in the supervision of the enclosure.

The County Board was able to observe that the operator does not, as provided in paragraph 14 of the business license (bilaga1), formulated a plan for how animals should be disposed of in an acceptable manner in the event that activities would have their license revoked.

County Administration assumes that these deficiencies been mentioned above will be addressed before considering a new business license

Overall, the County Board finds, in light of the conditions contained prescribed in the business license from 2004 and the circumstances in general, to Foundation Skåne Zoo operates in a satisfactory manner. Case removed from further prosecution.

This decision may be appealed to the Environmental Court, at Växjö District Court (below)

Redogörelse för ärendet

Det har kommit till länsstyrelsens kännedom att ansvarig personal vid Skånes

Djurpark i Höör tvingats avliva samtliga vargar i djurparken. Avlivningen skedde

sent på eftermiddagen lördagen den 9 januari 2010, sedan först två och sedan

ytterligare tre vargar lyckats rymma från parkens varghägn. Under de

eftermiddagstimmar då delar av vargflocken befunnit sig utanför hägnet revs en

kronhjortshind och ett antal får inne i djurparken.

Länsstyrelsen har, med anledning av ovanstående, genomfört ett tillsynsbesök hos

stiftelsen Skånes Djurpark den 14 januari 2010.

Skäl för länsstyrelsens beslut

Enligt 40 § artskyddsförordningen (2007:845) är det förbjudet att utan tillstånd

förevisa djur av vilda arter i en djurpark. Likaså gäller, enligt 42 §

artskyddsförordningen (2007:845), att en djurpark som är tillståndspliktig enligt

40 § och som bedrivs utan tillstånd skall stängas för allmänheten. Om tillståndet

för en djurpark helt eller delvis har återkallats, ska djurparken stängas för

allmänheten i de delar för vilka tillståndet har återkallats.

Om den som har tillstånd som avses i b l a 40 § artskyddsförordningen (2007:845)

bryter mot en föreskrift som är väsentlig för art- eller djurskyddet, får

länsstyrelsen återkalla tillståndet om detta inte är uppenbart oskäligt.

Enligt 59 § artskyddsförordningen (2007:845) ska tillsynsmyndigheten

regelbundet inspektera djurparker som avses i 40 § artskyddsförordningen .

Länsstyrelsen beslutade den 10 februari 2004 att bevilja Stiftelsen Skånes

Djurpark tillstånd, enligt dåvarande 19 a § artskyddsförordningen (1998:179), att

med stöd av samma förordning 18 § förevisa djur av arter som lever vilt.

Tillståndets gitighetstid var satt till den 31 december 2009 och gällande villkor

framgår av det bifogade beslutet. Verksamhetsutövaren har under december 2009

inkommit till länsstyrelsen med ansökan om nytt verksamhetstillstånd.

Länsstyrelsen har, enligt artskyddsförordningen (2007:845), operativt

tillsynsansvar för djurparkernas verksamhetstillstånd och däri beslutade villkor.

Den operativa tillsynens syfte är, enligt artskyddsförordningen, med hänvisning

till 26 kap 1 § miljöbalken samt tillsynsförordningen till miljöbalken (1998:90),

att säkerställa syftet med lagstiftningen och att kontrollera att villkoren i det

beslutade verksamhetstillståndet efterlevs samt att vid behov åstadkomma rättelse.

Länsstyrelsen har genomfört tillsynsbesök hos Stiftelsen Skånes Djurpark endast

med avseende på verksamhetstillståndet och någon inspektion enligt

djurskyddslagstiftningen har således inte genomförts.

Vid tillsynsbesöket genomförde länsstyrelsen, tillsammans med

verksamhetsutövaren, en genomgång av de villkor som finns uppställda i

verksamhetstillståndet. (bilaga1) Länsstyrelsen kunde därvid konstatera att

Stiftelsen Skånes Djurpark på de flesta punkter väl uppfyller de villkor som är

beslutade med stöd av artskyddsförordningen. Bland de dokument som

presenterades kan märkas verksamhetsplan (bilaga 2) för Stiftelsens Skånes

Djurpark vilken väl anknyter till de villkor som stadgar att djurparken skall

bedrivas utifrån en vetenskaplig utgångspunkt vad avser t ex främjande- och

bevarande av de djurarter som finns representerade. Djurparken deltar också i

utbildningar som ger kunskaper om arternas bevarande samt upprätthåller ett gott

informationsutbyte med andra verksamhetsutövare och allmänheten.

Verksamhetsberättelse( bilaga 3) för 2008 , djurinventeringslista (enligt 51 §

artskyddsförordningen (2007:845)(bilaga 4) samt kollektionsplan för Stiftelsen

Skånes Djurpark (bilaga 5) ingår också i verksamhetens dokumentation.

Med anledningen av att verksamhetsutövaren tvingats avliva hela sitt innehav av

vargar fanns anledning för länsstyrelsen att särskilt diskutera punkten nio i

villkoren för verksamhetstillståndet (bilaga 1), som gäller parkens upprättade

handlingsplan vid ev rymningar eller sabotage. (bilaga 6) Länsstyrelsen

konstaterar att Stiftelsen Skånes Djurpark agerat föredömligt i den akuta situation

som uppkom då ett antal vargar rymde från hägnet. Avlivningen var, utifrån

länsstyrelsens bedömning och under rådande omständigheter nödvändig.

Situationen sköttes helt i enlighet med upprättad handlingsplan (bilaga 6) för

olycks- och sabotagesituationer. Denna handlingsplan har också varit föremål för

”övning”, bland annat tillsammans med räddningstjänsten. Avlivningsbeslutet

togs, såsom länsstyrelsen förstår, bland annat därför att risken för att de förrymda

vargarna skulle ta sig ut från djurparkens område. Ett sådant scenario bedömdes

av personalen som överhängande. Avlivningen av de kvarvarande 7 vargarna i

hägnet gjordes sedan man upptäckt att en av de 5 förrymda individerna var

flockledaren, den sk ”alfatiken”. De kvarvarande vargarna blev mycket oroliga

och stressade när ”alfatiken” försvann.

Vid inspektion av varghägnet kunde länsstyrelsen konstatera att vissa tekniska

svagheter avseende hägnets konstruktion möjligen kunde ha varit för handen men

att dessa svagheter varit mycket svåra att upptäcka vid tillsyn av hägnet.

Länsstyrelsen kunde vidare konstatera att verksamhetsutövaren inte, såsom

stadgas i punkten 14 i verksamhetstillståndet (bilaga1), utarbetat någon plan för

hur djur skall kunna omhändertas på ett godtagbart sätt för den händelse att

verksamheten skulle få sitt tillstånd återkallat.

Länsstyrelsen utgår från att dessa brister som påtalats ovan kommer att åtgärdas

inför prövningen av ett nytt verksamhetstillstånd

Sammantaget finner länsstyrelsen, mot bakgrund av de villkor som finns

föreskrivna i verksamhetstillståndet från 2004 samt omständigheterna i övrigt, att

Stiftelsen Skånes Djurpark bedriver sin verksamhet på ett nöjaktigt sätt. Ärendet

avskrivs från vidare handläggning.

Detta beslut kan överklagas hos Miljödomstolen, vid Växjö tingsrätt (nedan)

A hippo escaped from a flooded private zoo in Montenegro Tuesday, shocking villagers who found her strolling near their homes.

Nikica escaped as heavy rains sent water flooding through the zoo, raising the water level in her pen and allowing her to swim over the top of the cage surrounding it.



The 11-year-old hippo made her way to the nearby hamlet of Plavnica, where she was still walking around Tuesday afternoon.



"When I got out from my house to feed my cow, I saw a hippo standing in front of the stall," said villager Nikola Radovic. "I thought I was going mad."



Zoo owner Dragan Pejovic said he will have to wait until the water levels drops before he attempts to recapture the hippo.



"Of course, we will not be able to bring her back until the water recedes," he said. Although hippos are known as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa, he said that "there is no reason for panic."

Wolves Escape from Skanes Animal Park

Very sadly a number of wolves escaped from the enclosure at the popular Skanes Nordic Animal Park in Southern Sweden.

The forested one hectare wolf enclosure was as popular with visitors to the park as it was for the wolves themselves as the animals are able to live out a semi natural lifestyle. Viewing of the wolf pack is through the netted fence or from the observation platform.

One of the more popular visitor attractions to the Park is the daily 'Meet The Wolf' when a select number of paying visitors are allowed into the enclosure with the keeper. Here they are given an introductory talk and get the opportunity to take photographs of the animals without having the view blocked. Handling the animals is strictly forbidden. 'Meet the Wolf' costs 1900 Kr.

The Wolves were spotted outside of their enclosure and close to the Moose by a member of staff who used his radio to alert other members of the Park. This conversation was unfortunately overheard by people outside of the zoo on their personal radios.
Learning of the escape the emergency procedure was put into action and all visitors were evacuated from the Park. A number of the escaped wolves were shot. As yet the exact number is unknown as is how the escape came about. As few as 4 and as many as 12 animals may have been killed.

This is not the first wolf escape from this collection. Another animal went missing from the enclosure in December 2006. Then it was speculated that it may have dug its way out under the fence.

An official statement on the incident will be issued today, Sunday 10th January 2010 after a full investigation has been carried out said Zoo Director Camilla Jonsson.

Questions will be asked as to why the animals were not cordoned off and recaptured.

The animal escaped as a result of a theft done by unknown thieves who broke the locks of the cage where the panther was.

Panty, the panther’s name, is eight years old and came to Cordoba as a “loan” from Buenos Aires’s zoo.



The zoo is located a few blocks from the center of the city, in front of the traditional neighborhood of Nueva Cordoba. Near it is located Parque Sarmiento, where the search is being held as well as inside the zoo.



Environmental Patrol agents, from Guard Infantry and the ether-group from the police are taking charge of the search, confirmed Daniel Villagra, an authority of the Zoo.

The Civil Protection agency says one of the tigers was quickly caught. But the other two escaped into a mountainous area about 19 miles from Morelia, capital of the Pacific coast state of Michoacan.

The tigers escaped Wednesday when their cage burst open while the caravan of the Circo Aquilar Hermanos drove along a highway.

Police and circus employees are searching for the two missing tigers.
