The Craig Busch Circus Comes To Town

In a desperate attempt to bolster his falling popularity and fill his dwindling coffers the ex Lion Man will be hosting an event in a city in middle England later this week.

No doubt a number of his UK Facebook fans, which are largely made up of blinkered acolytes and frustrated housewives will make the effort to attend and purchase signed photographs, DVD's and the like.

One would like think that Craig Busch would use the event to make, at last, a public apology over the declawing of the Big Cats at Zion Wildlife Park and explain honestly and clearly that he had not been involved in any conservation programme. The bonus would be if the money raised by this event was donated to the fund to repair the damage done by the declawing.

If the intention is to raise money to get 'his' park back then I believe he is pissing in the wind. No serious zoo would ever back him in such an undertaking.

Latest News From Zion Wildlife Gardens

Statement from Patricia Busch
Thursday 21 October, 2010

The following statement is made by Patricia Busch, Managing Director of Zion Wildlife Gardens Limited.

I feel honour bound to correct the amount of misinformation circulating the internet and some media about matters concerning my relationship with my son Craig Busch.

Many of you may not be aware that I was asked to come to the Park by Craig after the assault on his partner Karen.

I have now decided to put my current position forward and speak out for the first time.

Craig had got himself into financial difficulties and he asked if I would sell my farm and put the money into the Park to pay his bills. I agreed to help him and arrangements were put in place to settle his debts in the hundreds of thousands.

For the security of my other children and family’s future I requested he sign a document acknowledging such a transaction and assigning his interest to me.
Craig as part of that agreement could have his interest in the Park back at any time once I was repaid.
This we both thought would work well.

Together we put a plan in place and if Craig had worked as agreed the loan would have been repaid to me and would have a far lesser debt than I inherited, and Craig would have the Park back.

Craig decided to take various types of action and then commenced action against his own company to which the company had no choice but to defend.

The operational aspects became evident as I got to understand matters and the day to day running of the park. One of the actions to which I strongly objected, was the declawing of the following cats.

Amafu - Declawed
Imvula - Declawed
Marah - Declawed
Moya - Declawed
Laduma - Declawed
Gandor - Declawed
Timba - Declawed

The death of Khan was the next sad event when Craig saw fit to have this young white tiger he had bred and raised euthanized because of inbreeding deformities. He then proceeded to put Khan in the freezer for some time only to thaw him out when the Lionman filming commenced as he said the burial would make a good tv story. His actions regarding the postponement of Khan’s funeral affected members of the team.

The death of Samson under Craig’s stewardship as Operator concerned me as he prevented me from arranging the burial. Instead he insisted Samson, a fully grown male lion be held in a freezer with the.........

Craig Busch Hack Attack

Anyone who has ever read my article Craig Busch and Zion Wildlife Gardens will only be too aware that I am not a fan of the man, his methods or his message. I can however sympathise with the guy since I learned that someone had hacked into his online bank account and has being siphoning off his money. This is an awful thing to do to anybody. I hope the culprit is apprehended quickly.

I was even more sympathetic when I learned from the two newslinks today that Craig has been receiving threats (ie hate mail). I fail to understand the mental mess that draws such excuses for human beings to threaten others. They should be locked away.

There is a certain irony to hate mail aspect in that around 60% of that which I have personally received has been from Craig Busch fans.

Postponement of Zion Wildlife Gardens Case

Zion Wildlife Gardens case adjourned

A court appearance for Zion Wildlife Gardens to hear charges laid against the park has been postponed.

The charges, for failing to take steps to ensure safety of employees, were laid by the Labour Department, following the fatal mauling of big cat keeper Dalu MnCube last May.

Representatives of the park were to be in Whangarei District Court on Wednesday, but the charges have been adjourned, without plea, until

Zion Wildlife Gardens Charges Update

Mncube charges going to court

Four charges laid by the Department of Labour after the death of animal handler Dalu Mncube at the Zion Wildlife Gardens will be heard in the Whangarei District Court next week.

Mr Mncube was killed by a tiger while cleaning its enclosure in May last year.

His death was a major blow for the wildlife park on the outskirts of Whangarei, which had gained world fame through the Lion Man TV series.

Department of Labour communications adviser Eric Janse van Rensburg yesterday declined to specify who or what "entity" the charges had been laid against.

But the Northern Advocate understands all charges have been laid against Zion Wildlife Gardens as an entity and no individuals have been charged.

Two charges have been laid under Section 6 of the Health and Safety in Employment Act for "failing to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of employees while at work".

The other charges were laid under Section 16 of the act for "failing to take all practicable steps to ensure no hazard that is, or arises in, the place of work harms people who are lawfully at work as employees of a contractor".

Zion spokeswoman Sara Reid could not be contacted to comment on the charges yesterday, but she had earlier said they would be strenuously defended.

Tourists watched in horror as Mr Mncube, 26, was fatally mauled by a 260kg white tiger while he and another keeper were cleaning the animal's enclosure.

The second keeper had tried to use a length of wood to

Although I appreciate that conservation charities need the cash but so too do the Lions and Tigers mutilated on the instructions of Craig Busch in the Zion Wildlife Gardens. The cost to repair the damage is estimated to be quarter of a million New Zealand Dollars. What, if anything has Craig Busch ever done for conservation?

Lion Man ordered to return equipment to Wildlife Park

Lion Man ordered to return equipment to Wildlife Park

FROM THE NORTHERN ADVOCATE SATURDAY 7 NOVEMBER 2009
STORY MIKE DINSDALE

Lion Man Craig Busch has been ordered to return tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment he took after being sacked from the Whangarei Zion Wildlife Gardens he helped make famous around the world.

The Employment Relations Authority, in a decision released yesterday (6 November), ordered Mr Busch - who made global fame as television's The Lion Man - to give back a long list of property that he took after being dismissed in December, 2008.

Zion operator Tim Husband welcomed the decision, saying a big cat race, which also weighs the animals, and tranquiliser gun ordered returned, were vital for the park's operations.

Mr Busch's lawyer, Daniel Erickson, did not want to comment on the decision at this stage.

Mr Busch was sacked from Zion Wildlife Gardens, in Kamo after being accused of serious misconduct, including allegations of major breaches of safety protocols, inappropriate behaviour in the workplace and performance issues.

He took the matter to the authority, claiming unjustified dismissal by Zion Wildlife Gardens and Zion Wildlife Services, which are partly and wholly owned by his mother Patricia Busch.

Mr Busch then dropped his claim with the authority, but it heard a counter claim from Zion against Mr Busch and authority member Yvonne Oldfield found in the park's favour this week.

The property he is order to return includes: a 2005 Nissan Patrol, two trailers, a tranquiliser gun, auger drills for an excavator, power tools, a raceway for the big cats, air compressor, water pump, hoses and motor, saw bench, computers, ladders and gates.

Ms Oldfield found that it could be proved that some of the items Zion claimed relief over belonged to it and she did not order those items to be returned.

She made no order in relation to zoo records taken by Mr Busch relating to the big cats.

Ms Oldfield ordered Mr Busch to return the property by today or within three days of him returning from overseas. He is believed to be in the United Kingdom.

Mr Husband said for good animal husbandry, it was essential to be able to weigh animals regularly.

"Presently both staff and vets have to estimate the cats' weight then medicating and anesthetising the animals. this has put unnecessary pressure on staff and vets, as well as being potentially dangerous to the cats," he said .

Mr Busch's battle to regain control of Zion, after it was taken over by his mother, is to go to the High Court next year.

Wouldn't it be nice if Craig Busch fans....

Wouldn't it be nice if Craig Busch fans put their hands in their pockets to help out with the real problem here:

Crippled animals need money for surgery to help them walk

Zoo's cash claw-back

Story: Neil Reid - Sunday News

Zion Wildlife Gardens is set to appeal to big businesses for $250,000 to perform "reversing" operations on its declawed lions and tigers.
Sunday News reported last weekend that 29 of Zion's big cats featured on the hit TV show The Lion Man, had undergone the controversial procedure, condemned as "barbaric" by the wildlife park troubleshooter now overseeing the animals' welfare.
Consultant Tim Husband, hired by Zion after the fatal mauling of a ranger there in May, said declawing wasn't like removing a humans fingernails but more like cutting the first joints off their fingers.
Husband said if the declawed animals remained untreated, they would all eventually have severe hip and spinal problems from struggling to walk without their claws
Some of the cats had trouble gripping their meat, he said.
But ground-breaking surgery from specialist vet Dr Jennifer Conrad of Paw Project in Santa Monica, US offered hope.
"They open up again where the end of the toe was and they pull out the tendons and get the bone to grow back," Husband said.
"The claw doesn't grow back - but at least the bones are there so they can support the cat when they are walking."
"This surgery rectifies the way they walk so they won't have the problems later on in their life."
Husband said declawing reversal surgery took about six hours per cat, as opposed to "the original surgery to actually mutilate them which is actually only a few minutes" which involved sedating and cutting off the ends of their toes. Paw Project has so far operated on about 70 big cats in America.
"It would be the first time it has ever been done in Australasia. It would be a first and unfortunately it is sad that is has to be done at all," Husband said.
"If we got enough backers to do 29 cats, then they could do the lot." Husband said.
"If we can find funding to redo all of these cats, then that would be the way to do it"
He said Zion's marketing consultant Sara Reid "has been talking to local businesses. But you need the dosh to actually pay that kind of money".
He added: "So it is the real big businesses the park would like to come on board and help out here. It could be from anywhere in New Zealand, it is a real feel-good story for them, righting the wrongs."
Declawing took place before "Lion Man" Craig Busch's mother Patricia took over management of Zion from him two years ago. Two of the big cats had been declawed before arriving at the wildlife park, outside Whangarei.
A Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry investigation into the declawings at Zion included comments from the park's principle veterinarian from 2003-2005 during which The Lion Man series began screening.
The vet said "key drivers" behind the declawing included 'the animals...being used commercially to permit the financial survival of the zoo", and "close contact with handlers and film crews was required and personal safety was an issue".
Craig Busch was unavailable for comment, but his spokeswoman said in a statement he had acted "with the best interests of his cats uppermost in his mind".
The first tigers he brought into New Zealand in 2000 were declawed after "advice from experts in America".
Declawing had been carried out in the presence of MAF vets.
The MAF report, opbtained by Sunday News, considered the possibility of laying charges over the declawing.
But most of the operations from 2000-2008 had been supervised by MAF vets was "problematic to any prosecution".
Sunday News was earlier this week provided with a photograph of a declawed mountain lion, which had ended up walking on its "elbows".

****************************************************************************

So how about it Craig fans? If you really care about these cats why not assist in repairing the damage.

Some facts:

  • Declawing of big cats is not and was not standard procedure in any good zoo in the Americas and has been illegal in Europe (and rarely practised) for many many years. It rarely practiced in zoos worldwide because it is NOT necessary. I have never seen a single declawed cat in my zoo career. It has been almost a standard procedure in some countries for some domestic cat owners who should never be permitted to own a domestic cat.
  • None of the declawing was done whilst Patricia Busch was in charge. If in doubt read the official MAF report.
  • Not ALL the cats were declawed and so some of the clever movie footage will actually show claws on Zion cats.
  • MAF vets or all vets for that matter are not 'all seeing all knowing' and act on the instructions of their client. If Craig Busch told his vet that declawing was standard procedure there is no reason why they should disbelieve him especially after his consultation with Big Cat experts elsewhere (Who are they I wonder?)
  • The arguments put forward for declawing at Zion were pitiful at the best.
