Dubai is planning the Middle East's first Crocodile Park
 

So Dubai is planning a Crocodile Park.....why am I not happy with the idea? It is the statement "He added that it would not only be an amusement park but also an educational destination." I can read all sorts of things into that. I am all for education but not amusement. I recall with horror watching a so called educational show Davao Crocodile Park Roadshow  in the Phillippines and an even worse one in Sri Racha Tiger Zoo in Thailand.

I have a particular affection for crocodilians. I am not against them being farmed for their leather nor of people eating them, though I don't care for the taste myself. What I am especially against is the abuse that these magnificent creatures face in the many collections they are held. Crocodiles are, of practically all captive animals, a minor maintenance species. Apart from food a little bit of enrichment they need very little attention. They certainly do not to be teased out of the water with bits of chicken or beef for the 'amusement' (there's that word again) of visitors. It is the way it is done that matters. There is definitely no room for Crocodile wrestling (or Alligators) in my book.

 
I have never visited the collections in France, Tunisia and Belgium that Dubai is consulting so I don't really know what the plans are but I would suggest they make a priority visit to the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust outside of Chennai in India. This is one of the finest collections I have visited anywhere. Genuine Conservation, Education and Research a credit to the best of the zoo world and carried out on a very limited budget.

Now I know that Steve Irwin has been bestowed sainthood by many but I am going to say it anyhow.... and there is no doubt he did a lot of good in zoo promotion, but he has a lot to answer for too. Many think the bravado way to manage crocodiles is the way it is done. It isn't. They are placid creatures which just want to get on with doing what crocodiles do best. Eating, basking, sleeping.

Crocodile TRAINING is the way to go



Those of you who have read my article The Pointlessness of Alligator Wrestling will only be too aware that I am none too keen on the way that Alligators and Crocodiles are treated in some zoos. I am especially against the promotion of Alligator Wrestling as a 'sport'. Sport?! Ridiculous.
I have long been aware that these magnificent creatures could be effectively trained and as the following article shows... Crocodile TRAINING is the way to go. Lets hope that more collections drag themselves out of the dark ages and start to make the effort.





Crocodiles in Cheshire trained to obey commands
 Crocodiles at an aquarium in Cheshire have been trained to obey the commands of their keepers.


The Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port said the two reptiles could open and close their mouths and hold out their front legs on demand.

The male and female cuvier's dwarf caimans have also been taught to respond to their names, to stay still and to return to the water, it added.

The training programme is based on a similar scheme in India.

Blue Planet Aquarium's Adam Mitchell said: "We are one of the very few places in the world that have trained our crocodilians. Not a lot of people do it.

Target stick

"It enables us to move them and put them in transport crates and do medical procedures without having to restrain them, which would potentially stress them out.

"Plus handling a dangerous animal can also be dangerous for us."

The crocodiles, a male called Paleo and a female called Suchus, have been trained using a target stick which they associate with food.


"It is more or less the same thing that you would do with a domestic dog," Mr Mitchell explained.

"You associate a behaviour with a reward and that's exactly what we are doing with these guys.

"They will follow the target wherever it goes, so we can safely move them, say into a box."

The training, which is based on a programme at the Madras Crocodile Trust in India, means the crocodiles can be examined without having to be handled.

"The stay stick enables us to do specific medical procedures such as check their feet and check underneath their tail.

"I also make them stand up on their hind legs, which does sound like a bit of a circus trick, but it is the best way to check there are no wounds on their undersides."

The cuvier's dwarf caimans are the smallest of the crocodilian species, growing to between 1.2m and 1.5m in length and can live to 40 years or more.

“CROCODILE CONSERVATION THROUGH SUSTAINABLE USE”
 
 
“IUCN-Crocodile Specialist Group (CSG), Sabah Wildlife Department and University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) ” are organizing International Workshop on Human-Crocodile Conflict (HCC) to be held on 09th-11th June 2010 in Tuaran, Sabah, Malaysia, with the theme “Crocodile Conservation Through Sustainable Use”. Issues to be addressed during this workshop would be on conservation, management of Crocodile porosus in Pan Borneo Region. This workshop also aims at learning experiences of international participants in achieving conservation and management of Crocodylus porosus at local, regional and global level.


In the session 4 (Working Group Discussions), the group will be divided into 4 groups which will discuss different topics as below:

Group 1 : Population monitoring programs for Crocodylus porosus

Group 2 : Sustainable use program (farming, ranching and related Industry development)

Group 3 : Public education and awareness program on Crocodylus porosus

Group 4 : Land use planning to reduce Human-Crocodile Conflict

OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP:


• To develop an integrated and practical approach to crocodile management that incorporates better solutions to Human-Crocodile Conflict problems in the Pan Borneo Region

The Sacred Crocodiles of Manghopir

The origins of the Crocodiles in Manghopir are lost in time and there are many stories which relate to them. Presently they are located on the site of a shrine to a Muslim saint. A nearby archaelogical site (2500-1700 BC) suggests that Crocodiles were worshipped by people even way back then.

Electric Stunning of Crocodilians

Thank you to those who sent me the information on the electro-stunning of Alligators and Crocodiles. I admit it, it was all new ground for me. I have only manually caught around 20-25 Crocodilians in my zoo career and some of those many times. I have always relied on speed and judgement and never had to resort to chemical or other methods. 'Electro- Stunning' sounds awful but, having read through several papers this morning I will bow to the experts in the field. All the evidence shows it to be less stressful for the animals and I am all in favour of that.

electrical stunning (see paragraphs 73 and 74) has been demonstrated as a less stressful alternative to manual capture techniques, although it may have limited utility in wild situations (e.g. see Joanen and Perry 1971).



An alternative method of immobilising crocodiles is the use of techniques to stun with an electrical charge. Trialled on American alligators in the early 1970s (Joanen and Perry 1971), the methodology was refined and tested with saltwater crocodiles in Australia (Peucker et al. 2004). A study to evaluate stress responses (by measuring corticosol, glucose and lactic acid levels in the blood) of captive juvenile saltwater crocodiles subjected to electrical stunning compared to manual capture by noosing and roping, concluded that the stress response of electrically stunned animals was significantly less than those subjected to manual capture, and recovery was more rapid for stunned animals (Franklin et al. 2002, 2003; see also www.dpi.qld.gov.au/croc/12516.html).

Electrical stunning is achieved by delivery of a 110 V charge for 4-6 seconds (depending on size and body condition of the crocodile) via a set of metal forks placed on the skin on the back of the crocodile’s neck (contact with the cranium or skin osteoderms can greatly reduce the effectiveness of stunning). Crocodiles become rapidly immobilised during stunning, which is then followed by a period of 5-10 seconds of rigor and tail twitching. After this period the animal is relaxed with legs splayed backwards, parallel to the body. Crocodiles remain immobilised for 3-10 minutes, although some individuals may begin to regain movement after about 3 minutes. During the period of immobilisation they can be handled and restrained accordingly. The method requires the crocodile to be wet, and it has been found to be effective with crocodiles housed in both fresh and salt water.

Hatching to Harvest

Stunning equipment to capture crocodiles has been developed that was unique to Australia. This equipment has revolutionised the way in which animals are captured for relocation, measurement, examination and harvesting. Stunning equipment has attracted considerable international as well as national interest because more animals can be handled in a day’s work with less risk and injury to animals and staff alike. The equipment is now used in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Spain, Papua New Guinea and the USA. These countries collectively produce 70% of the world’s crocodilian skins.
Further, stunning as opposed to the traditional method, causes much less stress and fatigue for handlers. However there was some concern, expressed by Animal Ethics Committees, that stunning could be causing more stress to crocodiles. Consequently Departmental researchers collaborated with crocodile physiologists from the University of Queensland to examine stress levels in crocodiles captured by electrical stunning equipment and the traditional method of using a noose and pole.
With the noose and pole method animals do a body roll, struggle and thrash around compared to the quiet and minimal disturbance using the electrical stunning. Blood samples were taken and analysed for stress level indicators. Results demonstrated that capture by electrical stunning is less stressful
for the animal. This finding supports the observation of researchers and producers that animals recover more rapidly from capture trauma and commence feeding sooner if they are stunned compared with being caught by noose and pole.

Comparison of stress induced by manual restraint and immobilisation in the estuarine crocodile, Crocodylus porosus

Abstract
This study compared the stress induced in captive estuarine crocodiles, Crocodylus porosus, by two different handling methods: manual restraint (noosing with ropes) and immobilization by electro-stunning. To stun, a short charge (approx. 6 s) at 110 V was delivered to the back of the necks of C. porosus using a custom-built device, which immobilized the animals for 5-10 min. Immobilized and restrained animals were measured and sexed, and the condition of the skin assessed. Blood samples were taken from some animals immediately after restraint or immobilization. Other animals were returned to their pens to recover for periods of 30 min, 1, 4, 12, 24 or 48 hours after which they were stunned and blood samples taken. Individual animals (mean body length 1.96 m, N=99) were bled only once. Haematocrit and haemoglobin concentrations were measured and plasma samples were analysed for corticosterone, glucose and lactate levels. Following restraint, there were significant increases in haematocrit, haemoglobin, glucose, lactate and corticosterone concentrations in C. porosus. For restrained animals, recovery to baseline levels occurred after approximately 8 hours. The stress response of stunned animals was significantly reduced compared to manually captured and restrained crocodiles. Both groups showed a significant increase in haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration and lactate levels, however the magnitude of change was significantly reduced, and recovery was faster in stunned animals. No increase in either glucose or corticosterone levels occurred with immobilisation. The results imply that immobilization by electro-stunning is much less stressful.
