Background 

Penguins are highly iconic species much loved by the general public. They are also among the most threatened seabird species (Croxall et al. 2012). 
African penguin numbers have decreased by 70% since 2004 in South Africa (Crawford et al. 2011), and major conservation efforts have been undertaken to reverse this trend, such as the removal of predators on colonies or the implementation of artificial burrows for shelter against extreme weather events (Pichegru 2013). 
One of the main factors behind the decline in numbers is a lack of prey, owing to a recent shift over the past decades in the distribution and abundance of their preferred prey, sardines and anchovies (Crawford et al. 2015). This shift has resulted in competition with the purse-seine fishery for the same resource pool of small pelagic fish, especially around the penguin breeding colonies, to which adults must return in order to feed their offspring regularly (Pichegru et al. 2012). 
The purse-seine fishing industry is the largest fishery in South Africa in terms of landings (>600 000 t annually, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), unpubl. data), contributing significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and conservation management decisions are traded off against human livelihoods and jobs. 
The African penguin, however, is the only penguin in Africa and a major tourist attraction in South Africa (Lewis et al. 2012). Unfortunately, there is limited information on direct income generated from penguin-related tourism in South Africa and its contribution to the GDP, particularly in the Eastern Cape. 
This project will estimate the direct and indirect contribution of African penguins to the national and provincial economy in terms of direct revenues and job creation in order to inform trade-offs in conservation-fishery management decisions.

Effects of Anthropogenic Noise on Marine Mammals with a Specific View of Harbour Porpoises and Bottlenose Dolphins – Research course

9 – 15 July 2016
Kolmården Wildlife Park, Sweden

Gain hands on experience studying the impacts of anthropogenic noise on bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoises during this seven day research course that combines traditional lectures with practical field and laboratory work.

Lectures on the fundamentals of underwater acoustics, marine mammal acoustics, impacts of sounds on marine mammals, experimental design, and data analysis and interpretation are delivered by experts in the field. Acoustic data will be collected using multiple platforms during field trips. Guest speakers will share their research on how dolphin cognitive studies are conducted with captive dolphins.

Lecturers:
Dr Mats Amundin
Mats is Senior Advisor at Kolmården Wildlife Park and guest professor in Zoology at Linköping University, Sweden. His research interests include bioacoustics with emphasis on sound production in odontocetes and animal behaviour. Mats served as the project coordinator of SAMBAH (Static Acoustic Monitoring of the Baltic Sea Harbour Porpoise) for five years and as an acoustic expert for Sweden at the ASCOBANS (Agreement for the Protection of Small Cetaceans in the Baltic and North Sea) meetings.

Dr Paul Lepper
Paul is Senior Research Fellow in the School of Electronic, Electrical & Systems Engineering, Loughborough University, UK. He specialises in underwater acoustics, bioacoustics and underwater technologies. These include acoustic and optical underwater systems, sound field measurement, modelling and simulation.

- Fundamentals of underwater acoustics and marine mammal acoustic
- Impacts of sound on marine life
- Experimental methods for evaluating impacts of sound
- Experimental design including acoustic equipment
- Field techniques and data collection using acoustic platform
- Data processing, analysis and interpretation
- Dolphin cognitive studies field trip

Kolmården Wildlife Park, Sweden’s largest zoo, is home to 600 animals from around the world. The 370 acre park opened its doors in 1965 and has been a top attraction ever since. Kolmården overlooks Bråviken Bay in the beautiful Swedish countryside south of Stockholm.

Students on research projects too will find time is not often a friend.

I have just come across a tremendous App, which, if I had had years ago would have greatly increased my own input to research. I am sharing this today because I know so many of you will find it useful.

Okay, it is not exactly designed for zoos but with only minor changes you will find it works for you.

World’s Panda Experts Gather at Edinburgh Zoo

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) is proud to announce that they are bringing the foremost panda experts in the world to Scotland to develop a worldwide five year Giant Panda Research Project.

From the 10th to 12th September 2013, some of the world’s brightest lights will gather together in the same room for the very first time at Edinburgh Zoo for the Giant Panda Research Symposium. Spearheaded by RZSS, and the next important steps in the conservation charity’s Giant Panda Project, the event will see experts from around the world come together to help to develop a five year giant panda research plan which will have global ramifications on how giant pandas are cared for in zoos around the world and in Chinese reserves. The five year giant panda research plan will centre on five key areas: field ecology, genetic management, artificial breeding and infant panda care, veterinary management and research, then finally cognitive evolution and behavioural research.

Amongst many others, attending will be experts from RZSS, the CWCA (China Wildlife Conservation Association), CCRCGP (China Conservation and Research for Giant Pandas), the State Forestry Association for the People’s Republic of China (SFA), the Chinese Academy of Science and Peking University. Key individuals from panda zoos around the world will also be present, including experts from Smithsonian National Zoological Park, San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research and Memphis Zoo. Researchers and representatives from related UK and worldwide institutions who can bring their expertise to the key areas of panda research will also be in attendance, including key Scottish bodies like the Nutrition and Health at the University of Aberdeen, the Natural History for the University of Glasgow and the Psychology Department for the University of St Andrews.

The Symposium will be officially opened by the Chinese Consulate General Li Ruiyou.

The outcome of the Giant Panda Research Symposium, a multi-disciplinary global gathering to come up with a five year programme of integrated research and applied science, should make a real difference to the conservation of pandas and their habitat in the wilds of China. In Death Polar Bear 'Knut' Helps Science

Following the death of the polar bear Knut at Berlin Zoo, examinations carried out at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin showed that Knut was suffering from virus-induced encephalitis (acute inflammation of the brain). Researchers at Saarland University and IZW have now analysed his genetic material and discovered and characterised new sequences of endogenous retroviruses. The retroviruses were also found in another former resident of Berlin Zoo: the giant panda Bao Bao. The work of the research team indicates that these viruses were inserted into the genome of an ancestor of both bear species some 45 million years ago. These newly discovered viruses are very similar to those found in the genetic material of bats, cattle and even humans. Some of these viruses are suspected of being involved in triggering some diseases in humans. The study has now been published in a recent edition of the journal Virology.

Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are viruses that at some point in the past inserted themselves into the nuclear genome of a host's germ cell. Once integrated in a germ cell the virus would be passed on from one generation to the next and the endogenous retroviral genome would therefore be inherited to new species that evolve from the original host. 'ERV sequences and fragments make up about eight per cent of the human genome,' explains Professor Jens Mayer from the Department of Human Genetics at Saarland University. Endogenous retroviruses are found not only in humans, but also in other mammals such as horses, cattle, apes, koalas and, as has now been shown, in polar bears and giant pandas.

Working in collaboration with Professor Alex D Greenwood and Kyriakos Tsangaras from the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin, Jens Mayer has been taking a closer look at the DNA sequences from polar bears and great pandas. 'We have characterised endogenous retroviral sequences in both bear species and found a strong similarity between the two, which indicates that these two virus species are closely related,' says human geneticist Mayer. The researchers also identified ERV sequences in other bear species such as the brown bear, the black bear and the spectacled bear. 'Using molecular dating methods we have now been able to show that the retrovirus became integrated into the genetic material of an ancestor of today's bear species around 45 million years ago,' explains Greenwood. The research team also showed that the original retrovirus was closely related to those found in the genomes of bats and cattle. Interestingly, the viruses found in bears exhibit strong similarity with several endogenous retroviruses found in the human genome. 'Some of these sequences are suspected of playing a role in the occurrence of cancer, neurodegenerative or autoimmune diseases,' says Mayer.

The sort of extensive genome analysis of different species of wildlife carried out in this study helps scientists gain a better insight into the evolution of retroviruses by learning which retroviruses infected which groups of animals millions of years ago. The data can also provide valuable information on the evolutionary development of mammals. The researchers make use of a variety of techniques to analyse DNA sequences, including very recent high-throughput ('next generation') sequencing methods that facilitate highly efficient DNA sequencing.

In addition to research scientists from Saarland University and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, scientists from the following institutions were also involved in the study: the Berlin Center for Genomics in Biodiversity Research, the Natural History Museum of Denmark, the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California (San Francisco), the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology and the Institute of Virology at Freie Universität Berlin.

Background information:
Professor Dr Jens Mayer carries out research in the Department of Human Genetics at the Center for Human and Molecular Biology, Saarland University. The main focus of his research work is human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs). Questions that Mayer is interested in include how these viruses have altered our genome, how they influence the functions of our genetic material and in which diseases HERVs may play a role.

His expertise in analysing the human genome, particularly HERV sequences, can assist studies such as the present one that analyse the genomes of other species, particularly their endogenous retroviruses.

Professor Alex D Greenwood is head of the Department for Wildlife Diseases at the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) and holds the Chair for Wildlife Diseases at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Freie Universität Berlin. An important focus of the research in the department is reciprocal pathogen transmission between wild and domesticated animals, including the transmission of pathogens in zoo animals. The research work uses modern methods of veterinary medicine, molecular medicine and electron microscopy.

Orangutan Research Grants



Orangutan Research Grants

The Foundation has been running a small grants programme for over 15 years.

Applications will only be considered from students studying orangutan behaviour and ecology or related rainforest field research in either Indonesia or East Malaysia. Preference will be given to research focusing on understudied populations and to candidates demonstrating a high level of competence.

Up to four grants are awarded annually to a maximum of £500 each.

The application deadline has now been extended to 9th June 2011

2011 INTERNATIONAL ELEPHANT AND RHINO CONSERVATION AND RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM


The Rotterdam Zoo in association with the International Elephant Foundation (IEF) would like to invite you to participate in the 2011 Elephant and Rhino Research and Conservation Symposium scheduled for October 10-14, 2011 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

This year IEF welcomes to the elephant symposium our colleagues working with all species of rhinos, both in human care and in the wild. Elephants and rhinos face similar problems in the wild (habitat loss and poaching), and many animal managers, field conservationists, veterinarians and researchers work with both rhino and elephant.

Registration fees will be 250 Euros which will include congress fee, ice-breaker, lunches, beverages offered during the congress, dinner at the Zoo (Wednesday night).

Submissions for oral presentations and posters on all aspects of elephant conservation and research are now being accepted.

From Edinburgh to Brazil – Scottish Society Helps the World’s Largest Freshwater Wetland


To coincide with World Wetland Day on Wednesday 2nd February 2011, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), the society who own and manage Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park, has announced the breakthrough development and launch of a special piece of software that now contributes to the vital conservation of the Pantanal freshwater wetlands in Brazil. The project is the culmination of six years research.

Although the chillier forested wetlands of the east of Scotland seem a million miles away from the hot and humid wetlands of Brazil, the RZSS regional conservation and research team has worked with local organisations to develop this special project.

Since its creation the RZSS has placed great emphasis on the conservation of biodiversity and the contribution of scientific research. As well as a successful breeding programme and living collection from across the globe, the society’s team of some of the most knowledgeable experts in the world conduct and support a number of projects both at home and abroad.

The programme, called the DeltaDiet, is crucial to help conserve and protect the Brazilian Pantanal which has become increasingly threatened by large development programmes and changes in land management practices. This tool, developed by the RZSS team and Embrapa Pantanal (Brazilian Government research institute), allows the rapid analysis of faecal samples from plant eating animals, which in turn helps scientists understand the nutritional needs and the foraging strategies of animals in the wetlands – all crucial information that will contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of the Pantanal ecosystem.

Dr Arnaud Desbiez, the RZSS regional conservation and research coordinator for Latin America, comments: “This is an immensely positive long term legacy left by RZSS. To date over 250 plants have been characterised, leading to detailed manuals for plant families being published, and we have been able to examine the diet of several species through the different seasons of the year. This is particularly urgent since cattle ranching activities are intensifying and destroying important wildlife habitat. The DeltaDiet tool is ultimately key to developing a strategy to conserve the threatened Brazilian Pantanal – the largest freshwater wetland in the world.”

The database will now be widely and freely available for use by other researchers and will constantly be updated with new data. Other conservation and research projects continue to be developed by RZSS in the region.

A See Through Goldfish

Japanese Researchers Create See-Through Goldfish


See-through goldfish could be used for research purposes, or make an expensive pet




South Korean scientists may have created a glowing cat, but Japanese researchers have successfully developed a transparent goldfish.



The clear goldfish allows observers to see the tiny fish's beating heart, which allows scientists to observe living creatures and reduces the numbers of dissections.



"You can see a live heart and other organs because the scales and skin have no pigments," said Yukata Tamaru, Mie University associate professor, in a statement to the AFP. "You don't have to cut it open. You can see a tiny brain above the goldfish's black eyes. Having a pale colour is a disadvantage for goldfish in an aquarium but it's good to see how organs sit in a body three-dimensionally."



The goldfish could live up to 20 years and can grow up to 10 inches in length. Researchers can view the fish as it grows from a speck up to a five-pound goldfish later in life.

The successful candidate will be required to be a hands-on member of the Team. He/she will be responsible for the overall day to day running of the section to which he/she is assigned in the Animals and Grounds department.



He/she will supervise, roster, support and assist the animal care staff within their assigned section, ensuring world's best practice, general compliance with Health and Safety regulations and consistent performance to overall Zoo management standards.



The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years experience in a medium-sized zoological garden and / or wildlife park within a senior Keeper position and must demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of a Dublin zoo's ethics, research, education programs and conservation involvements.
