Zookeeping: An Introduction to the Science and Technology

Zookeeping: An Introduction to the Science and Technology

Zookeeping is destined to become the ‘must have’ comprehensive resource for the zoo industry. It offers an abundance of information and knowledge for the novice zookeeper and the seasoned veteran alike. From the history of zoos to animal welfare, training, husbandry, and beyond—to the future of the zoological institution—as we know it. Zookeeping coversit all, replacing dozens of single-subject books. The contributors are among the most respected and recognized zoo experts, and they include nearly every conceivable subject of interest to those in the field.”
(International Conference of Zookeepers)

“Zoos and aquariums may vary in size and design, but what should always remain consistent is the quality of animal care.  Zookeeping will contribute greatly to the professional development of new animal care professionals by providing core information and best practices, helping to develop and enhance keeper knowledge at the entry level. Mark Irwin, his colleagues, and more than seventy contributors have made a great contribution to fundamental animal care. The American Association of Zoo Keepers is proud to include this volume as part of its standardized instruction for the professional development of animal care professionals.”
(Bob Cisneros American Association of Zoo Keepers)

“Initially, Zookeeping was meant to be for zookeepers only. The final product, however, is probably the most comprehensive guide to what you should know about running a good zoo business ever published. Animals are at the center of this book: it is about their care and conservation. For that purpose, top experts from the zoo business provide insight into animal husbandry, diseases, behavior, taxonomy, the legal situation, conservation, and international cooperation—to name just a few subjects. All those issues make a modern zoo and help preserve biodiversity worldwide.”
(Gerald Dick World Association of Zoos and Aquariums)

The World's First White Ligers

The World's First White Ligers

This isn't real.....but it is just a matter of time

This is the big news story put out yesterday by the 'Daily Mail'.....see HERE
Actually I wonder if they are. Perhaps that other irresponsible breeder of hybrid big cats, Joe Exotic, who just bred the world' first Liliger has one hidden away in his backyard.

These two guys 'Doc' Antle and Joe Exotic are doing more harm to conservation and promoting more lies than is good for the safety of our planet. They need to be stopped. There is nothing clever in what they are doing. It is wrong no matter which way you look at it. What makes it worse is that people like Antle have the ear of the US Congress and can actually sway things, the way the laws are made. Something needs to be done....urgently. These conservation criminals must be called to task. They are as bad as poachers in my eyes.

Breeding White Lions and White Tigers is not just wrong but it demonstrates ignorance and lack of caring. I really cannot see why reputable zoos do it. Breeding hybrids and freaks or even renting them is wrong. I note a two headed calf was born in Morocco this week....to be sure there are zoos out there which would purchase this.....and really if you think about it it is really no different to a White Liger.

White Tiger Breeding is Not Conservation

White Lion Breeding Is Not Conservation

Just What Is The Point Mr Antle?

Corruption meets Anti - Conservation

The story....if a story it is:

A roaring success, the world's first white ligers: Four brothers are rarest big cats on the planet

  • Yeti, Odlin, Sampson and Apolo are the world's most unique big cats
  • First 'liger' cubs to be born from white male lion and white female tiger
  • At six weeks old, they already weigh 15lbs and gain a pound a day
These adorable cubs may look cute and unassuming but they are in fact the rarest of their species – and could grow to be the biggest cats in the world.
The four handsome male ‘liger’ cubs are the first ever to be born from a white male lion and white female tiger, making them the world’s most unique big cats.
There are only around 300 white lions and 1,200 white tigers left in the world, so the cubs’ father, Ivory and mother, Saraswati, are extremely rare in their own right.

We will have Isabelline Pandas

We will have Isabelline Pandas

I have little doubt in my mind that we will soon have Isabelline Pandas. The Dysfunctional Zoos of our planet appear hung up on producing unnatural colours, hybrids and freaks. So the Isabelline Panda will fairly soon be on its way.

Many of you will have forgotten QiZai (Little Seven) so let me remind you. QiZai is presently the only Isabelline Panda in captivity. QiZai is a Qinling panda and presently lives in the Shaanxi Wild Animal Research Centre in Northwest China (Louguantai Wild Animal Breeding And Protection Center).

The Quinling Pandas are a rare subspecies of the Giant Panda and are said to number only around three hundred in the wild. Although known for several decades the Quinling Panda Ailuropoda melanoleuca qinlingensis was only recognised as a subspecies in 2005.

The Quinling Pandas tend to be smaller than the common Giant Panda and are brownish and white rather than black and white. The brown colour is not usually as pronounced as it is in QiZai and is more often in patches rather than all over the body. QiZai is, as far as anyone is aware the only Isabelline Panda in the world today. Only five of similar colour have ever been seen.

QiZai was first spotted in November 2009 in the company of his black and white mother. He was estimated to be about two months old at the time. Now five years old he is just edging into breeding age. Call me whatever you like but I am sure there is a group of scientists who have just been waiting for this coming of age.

Factory farming of Pandas in China is already state of the art and QiZai will surely be the anonymous donor father of a large number of baby pandas....just to produce more of the same colour.
